Celebrating the Season: How to Keep Christ at the Center of Holidays

Holidays are meant to be joyful—but let’s be honest, they can also be stressful, overwhelming, and, at times, lonely. Between shopping, travel, family obligations, and endless to-do lists, it’s easy for the true meaning of the season to get lost. Yet, no matter the holiday—Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, or even special church celebrations—there’s a simple way to make sure Christ stays at the center: intentionality.

Start With a Heart of Gratitude

Before the gifts, meals, or decorations, pause to give thanks. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we don’t have to the abundant blessings God has already given.

Psalm 107:1 says:

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.”

Gratitude turns ordinary moments into spiritual milestones. A simple “thank you, God” for daily blessings sets the tone for the entire season.

Make Family and Faith a Priority

  1. Create Traditions That Focus on God

    • Read the Christmas story together, act it out, or create a devotional time before a meal.

    • At Easter, reflect on the resurrection and its impact on daily life.

  2. Serve Together

    • Volunteer at a food bank, visit a nursing home, or create care packages for families in need. Serving together reminds everyone that Christ’s love is meant to be shared.

  3. Pray as a Family or Group

    • Before meals, gatherings, or even gift exchanges, take a moment to pray.

    • Include gratitude, intercession, and reflection on the holiday’s spiritual meaning.

Keep Perspective

Holidays can stir up all kinds of emotions—stress, nostalgia, or even sadness. Remember: the season isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. Being fully present with God, family, friends, and your community allows the joy of the holiday to shine through, even in imperfect circumstances.

Small Ways to Keep Christ in Focus

  • Display Scripture verses or devotional reminders around your home.

  • Listen to faith-based music that draws your heart toward God.

  • Give gifts that carry spiritual meaning—books, devotionals, or experiences that build faith.

  • Take time for reflection: a quiet walk, journaling, or meditating on God’s promises.

A Word of Encouragement

Keeping Christ at the center doesn’t mean eliminating fun, tradition, or festivity—it means aligning those activities with God’s love. When we choose intentionality, the season becomes less about stress and more about worship, gratitude, and connection.

Even in the busiest or most chaotic holiday, small intentional choices—like a prayer, a Scripture reading, or an act of service—can remind your heart and your family that the reason for the season is Jesus.
